Paul Mathey was born in 1950 in Merzig in the German region of Saarland.
After training to become a display window artist and working in the field for a
few years, Mathey decided in the mid-70s, to devote himself to his artwork. He
studied at the renowned Städelschule, the academy for fine arts in Frankfurt am
Main. After studying for a while in Turkey, he went on to open his own atelier
in 1985.
Mathey’s work is captivating in its accurate depiction of objects, which are
skillfully arranged to create very atmospheric picture compositions. The use of
gold surfaces and dark backgrounds helps to transform objects taken from
everyday life and nature into luxurious items.
The observer gets to look at these objects in a different light and is
stunned by their beauty, be it orchids, books or a bowl of fruit. Mathey is a
renowned artist and boasts of a number of exhibitions in Germany and abroad.
